In what could go down as one of the most memorable chases in IPL history, 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi stole the spotlight with a sensational century as Rajasthan Royals (RR) overpowered Gujarat Titans (GT) in a high-scoring encounter, chasing down 210 with 25 balls to spare.
The match began with early drama when Yashasvi Jaiswal top-edged a pull off Ishant Sharma in the second over. Despite a fielder being closer to the swirling ball, Jos Buttler took charge but failed to complete the catch. That missed opportunity proved costly as Jaiswal and Suryavanshi went on to stitch a record-breaking 166-run opening partnership in just 11.5 overs.
Jaiswal played the support role to perfection, finishing unbeaten on 70 off 40 balls. However, it was the young prodigy Suryavanshi who lit up the evening with a blistering 38-ball 101, becoming the youngest centurion in men’s T20 cricket. RR raced to 87 runs in the powerplay and eventually wrapped up the chase in just 15.5 overs.
GT batter B Sai Sudharsan, who scored 39 off 30 balls to reclaim the Orange Cap from Virat Kohli, admitted the dropped catch was a turning point. “We could have and we should have taken that catch, that would have made a big difference,” he said post-match. “But it was early on, and we can't be so harsh.”
Despite GT’s total of 209 being considered par or slightly above, their bowling unit faltered under pressure. “No credit taken away from Vaibhav—the way he batted was tremendous,” Sudharsan said. “But we could have reacted better in the powerplay and adapted our lengths and plans.”
Questions have also emerged around GT’s use of R Sai Kishore. Despite being the team's second-highest wicket-taker with 12 scalps, he bowled just one over in the match, coming in only after the left-hand duo of Suryavanshi and Nitish Rana were dismissed. This pattern has been observed in several games, prompting criticism from analysts.
Former India pacer Varun Aaron and commentator Ian Bishop both questioned the tactical hesitation. “Sai Kishore can bowl well to lefties too. It’s puzzling,” Bishop said. “Are you saying he can only bowl to right-handers?”
While the defeat raised eyebrows about GT’s tactical calls, the team still sits comfortably in third place on the IPL 2025 points table with 12 points from nine games. They face Sunrisers Hyderabad next on Friday in Ahmedabad, aiming to secure a playoff spot.
As for Rajasthan Royals, the rise of Suryavanshi has added a thrilling new dimension to their campaign—one that might just redefine the season.
