Karachi Kings captain David Warner did not mince words after his side's dramatic collapse handed Quetta Gladiators a stunning five-run victory in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025 clash at the Gaddafi Stadium on Friday. Chasing a modest 143, the Kings were cruising at 77 for 1 before losing seven wickets for just 38 runs to end their innings at 137 for 8.
Warner, who was dismissed early by Mohammad Amir, expressed disappointment over his team's approach in the second half of the chase, particularly after the dismissal of in-form opener Tim Seifert, who scored a brisk 47 off 26 balls.
“Tonight just wasn't good enough,” Warner said in a post-match interview. “I don't mind losing if you're fighting, but handing the opposition the game is just not acceptable. We didn't take any positive approaches there. When you lose 5 for 14 in just under five overs, you're not going to win too many games.”
He also criticized the team’s complacency in a chase that had seemed firmly in control. “I don't think they bowled particularly well in that area — I think we were just a little bit complacent and we lost wickets in clumps.”
Despite the defeat, Warner praised his bowling unit, which had earlier done an excellent job to restrict Gladiators to 142 on what he believed was a batting-friendly surface. “The wicket was fantastic. I don’t think 142 and 137 reflect the surface at all. It was a 170-180 wicket. So to bowl them out for 142 was exceptional,” he said.
Warner, who joined the franchise this season as their marquee signing and captain, has been trying to lead a turnaround for the Kings, who have missed the playoffs in each of the last three seasons. The campaign so far has seen mixed results, with three wins and three losses in six games.
“It’s about assessing what we’re doing well,” Warner added. “Batting-wise, it’s simple — we weren’t positive. In the games we’ve won, we’ve played with intent. Even in the losses, we’ve shown fight. This time, we just didn’t.”
The Kings now have a four-day break before their next match on May 1, when they face Multan Sultans — currently bottom of the table. With the playoffs race heating up, Karachi will be looking to bounce back and avoid further slip-ups.
