Washington Freedom Advance to MLC 2025 Final After Qualifier 1 Washout

Washington Freedom have booked their place in the MLC 2025 final after their Qualifier 1 clash against Texas Super Kings was abandoned due to heavy rain. With no reserve day allocated for the knockout fixture, Freedom progressed to the final by virtue of finishing at the top of the points table in the league stage.

This marks Freedom’s second consecutive appearance in an MLC final, solidifying their status as one of the most consistent teams in the competition.

The highly anticipated match was scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM local time at Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas on July 8. Although the toss took place on time at 6:30 PM—with Washington Freedom opting to bowl first—the start of play was delayed shortly thereafter due to a lightning advisory. Soon after, heavy rain swept through the area, forcing ground staff to cover the pitch.

Despite efforts to get the game underway, persistent wet weather made conditions unplayable. The match was officially called off at 9:45 PM local time—two hours and 45 minutes after the scheduled start, and just 41 minutes before the cut-off for a five-over contest.

Freedom made one change to their playing XI from their last league game, bringing in New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson in place of Mark Chapman. The Texas Super Kings named an unchanged side.

With the washout, Texas Super Kings will now have to play Qualifier 2, where they will face the winner of the Eliminator between MI New York and San Francisco Unicorns, scheduled for Tuesday.

Despite the anticlimactic result, Washington Freedom’s consistent performance throughout the season has earned them a direct path to the final, where they will look to claim their first MLC title.
