Xavier Bartlett Joins San Francisco Unicorns in MLC 2025

Bartlett, currently playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) under the guidance of Ricky Ponting at Punjab Kings, will link up with fellow Australians Cooper Connolly, Jake Fraser-McGurk, and Matt Short at the Unicorns. His arrival is seen as a major boost for the franchise’s bowling arsenal ahead of the tournament, which runs from June 12 to July 13.

The 25-year-old has enjoyed a meteoric rise in recent seasons, making an immediate impact in international cricket with 11 wickets from seven T20Is at an economy rate of 6.84. His breakthrough came during the 2023–24 Big Bash League (BBL) where he led the wicket-taking charts for Brisbane Heat, a performance that earned him his international debut and a Cricket Australia contract—one he retained in the latest central contracts list released earlier this month.

San Francisco Unicorns head coach Shane Watson praised the signing, saying, “Xavier has shown his prowess leading the bowling attack for the Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League, and he will be a great addition to the Unicorns bowling line-up with his wicket-taking ability with the new ball. Having developed through the national pathways in Australia and onto the international scene, he's matured into a very clever pace bowler, able to both keep the rate down and break key partnerships.”

Bartlett’s availability for Australia’s upcoming T20I series against the West Indies could depend on how selectors manage the workload of multi-format bowlers. He is also in contention for the Top End series against South Africa in August, which includes both T20Is and ODIs.

While several Australian players will feature in MLC 2025, those involved in the concurrent Test series against the West Indies will be unavailable for selection in the tournament.
