Yasir Khan’s Blazing 87 Powers Multan Sultans to First Win of PSL 2025

Yasir Khan’s Blazing 87 Powers Multan Sultans to First Win of PSL 2025

Multan Sultans finally opened their account in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025 with a commanding 33-run win over Lahore Qalandars at the Multan Cricket Stadium. On a sweltering evening in their first home fixture, it was Yasir Khan’s explosive 87 off just 44 balls that laid the foundation for a record-breaking total of 228 for 5 — the highest ever PSL score at the venue.

Backed by Iftikhar Ahmed’s unbeaten 40 from just 18 balls and valuable contributions throughout the innings, Multan posted a formidable target that proved far beyond the Qalandars’ reach. Despite early promise, Lahore faltered in their chase and could only muster 195 for 9.

Yasir Sets the Tone

Multan’s innings got off to a flyer, thanks to a fearless opening stand between Yasir Khan and skipper Mohammad Rizwan. The duo tore into Lahore’s much-vaunted pace attack, especially targeting Shaheen Afridi, Zaman Khan, and Haris Rauf, who collectively conceded 119 runs in their eight overs.

Zaman’s fifth over was taken for 22 by Yasir, while Rizwan dispatched Rauf for 20 in the following over, taking Multan to 79 in the powerplay. Though Rizwan fell for 33, Yasir continued his onslaught, bringing up his fifty with a towering six off Rishad Hossain.

The carnage continued as Usman Khan and Yasir punished Daryl Mitchell before Rauf returned to suffer more punishment — leaking 54 runs in just three overs. In the final over, Iftikhar Ahmed capitalized on Shaheen’s lack of rhythm, smashing 14 to push the total to 228.

Qalandars Fall Short Despite Bright Start

Chasing a steep target, Lahore needed a strong start and looked on course when Fakhar Zaman bludgeoned 30 runs off David Willey’s first two overs. However, the momentum was short-lived. After briefly threatening, Fakhar fell for 32, thanks to a stunning catch by Josh Little off Ubaid Shah’s bowling.

Abdullah Shafique and Mitchell stitched together a 36-run stand, but the rising required rate forced errors. Multan struck back with three quick wickets — removing Shafique, Mitchell, and Rishad — effectively ending Lahore’s hopes.

Sam Billings and Sikandar Raza attempted a late recovery. Billings looked dangerous, scoring briskly, but was undone by Ubaid in the 15th over, who claimed his third wicket in a fiery spell, ending with 3 for 37.

Ubaid’s animated celebration inadvertently struck teammate Usman Khan on the face, drawing laughter and cheers from the crowd — a light-hearted moment in a dominant performance.

Consolation Fifty for Raza

Sikandar Raza stood tall at the end, smacking a 27-ball fifty, including several towering sixes. However, the result had long been sealed. Lahore’s innings fizzled out at 195 for 9, giving Multan a much-needed and morale-boosting first win of the season.

Match Summary

Multan Sultans 228 for 5 (Yasir 87, Iftikhar 40, Rishad 2-45) beat Lahore Qalandars 195 for 9 (Raza 50, Billings 43, Ubaid 3-37) by 33 runs**

With their campaign now up and running, Multan Sultans will be hoping this dominant display is a sign of things to come.
