Devon Conway has been recalled to New Zealand’s T20I squad for the upcoming tri-series in Zimbabwe after Finn Allen was ruled out with a foot injury sustained during the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025 tournament. Allen, who was representing the San Francisco Unicorns, will now miss both the MLC playoffs and the entire Zimbabwe tour.
Conway, who last played a T20I for New Zealand during the 2024 T20 World Cup, was initially left out of the squad but returns as a direct replacement. He recently featured in the MLC for the Texas Super Kings, scoring 135 runs in four matches at a strike rate of 127.35.
“We’re really gutted for Finn,” head coach Rob Walter said. “I was looking forward to working with him and seeing him carry his form forward. But we’re fortunate to have someone of Devon’s experience and quality to step in.”
New Zealand have also added batters Mitchell Hay and Tim Robinson, along with allrounder James Neesham, as cover for Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Glenn Phillips, and Rachin Ravindra — all of whom are participating in the MLC final this Sunday.
“We anticipated a scenario where several players could be involved in the MLC final,” Walter added. “So Mitch, Jimmy and Tim are coming in as potential replacements.”
Mitchell Santner will lead the side in the tri-series, which also features South Africa and hosts Zimbabwe, as Rob Walter begins his tenure as head coach. He is supported by Luke Ronchi, Jacob Oram, and James Foster on the coaching staff.
The squad is missing several key players. Kane Williamson is unavailable as he continues his stint with Middlesex in the English county circuit, while Lockie Ferguson has been rested for workload management. Kyle Jamieson opted out of the tour to be with his family for the birth of his child, and fast bowler Ben Sears is sidelined with a side strain.
New Zealand will kick off their campaign on Wednesday against South Africa at the Harare Sports Club. The tri-series follows a double round-robin format, with the top two teams qualifying for the final on July 26.
