India Under-19s Dominate Day One with 450-7 Against England Under-19s

India Under-19s took firm control on the opening day of the first Youth Test against England Under-19s at Beckenham, racking up an imposing 450 for 7 at stumps, thanks to standout performances from Ayush Mhatre (102), Abhigyan Kundu (90), and Rahul Kumar (85).

Opting to bat first after winning the toss, India made a strong statement despite an early setback. Much-anticipated 14-year-old prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi fell for 14, after hitting a classy boundary off the first ball but nicking a delivery from Alex Green to Ralphie Albert at deep third shortly after.

The innings, however, quickly stabilized thanks to a commanding 173-run partnership between opener Mhatre and Vihaan Malhotra (67). Mhatre, who had some early luck — dropped twice on 6 and 66 — capitalized to notch up his maiden first-class century. He struck 14 boundaries and two sixes, reaching three figures with a confident loft over long-off against Archie Vaughan.

Malhotra, too, looked composed, reaching his fifty with a calm two off Vaughan. However, England struck back just as the partnership threatened to take the game away. Vaughan removed Mhatre with a brilliant boundary catch from Ekansh Singh, while Green dismissed Malhotra shortly after with a sharp outswinger.

Vaughan then claimed his second when Maulyarajsinh Chavda edged to first slip for 11, giving England a brief window of opportunity.

But India once again rebuilt through a 179-run fifth-wicket stand between Kundu and Kumar. Kumar, aggressive from the start, sped to his fifty in just 43 balls, while Kundu played the anchor role before opening up with some elegant strokeplay, including a boundary off Albert to reach his half-century.

Both batters were eventually dismissed in the same over by Jack Home — Kundu falling 10 short of a century, caught at point, and Kumar edging to keeper Tom Rew shortly after. Home ended the day with two wickets, as did Vaughan and Green.

Mohamed Enaan contributed a brisk 23 before being trapped lbw by Albert. England’s fielding, however, let them down badly, with four dropped catches — a costly lapse on a day dominated by India.

Henil Patel survived a tough chance at slip off Home, and RS Ambrish was also dropped late in the day by Denly off Green. The day's play was called off at 6:30 pm with eight overs remaining, enhancing the authentic Test-match atmosphere of the contest.

With India already past the 450-mark and three wickets still in hand, the visitors are well poised to dictate terms on day two.
