James Bracey Leads Gloucestershire Recovery as Glamorgan Fight Back in Severnside Derby

A battling century from James Bracey and a resilient unbeaten stand between Colin Ingram and Ben Kellaway left the Severnside derby finely poised at the end of day two of the County Championship clash between Glamorgan and Gloucestershire.

Gloucestershire posted a competitive 380 in their first innings, thanks largely to Bracey’s superb 133 — his first century of the season — and a record-breaking final-wicket partnership of 89 with Archie Bailey. In response, Glamorgan recovered from early setbacks to reach 228 for 4 by stumps, trailing by 152 runs with Ingram (52*) and Kellaway (55*) unbeaten.

Resuming on 279 for 7, Gloucestershire looked vulnerable early as Timm van der Gugten struck twice in the first five overs of the morning to remove Todd Murphy and Ajeet Singh Dale. However, Bracey, who began the day on 57, held firm and found a reliable partner in Bailey, who contributed a vital 23 not out — his first runs in First-Class cricket — during a stubborn 56-ball stay.

The pair's stand frustrated Glamorgan, who squandered multiple chances to end the innings. Bracey was dropped on 87 by Andy Gorvin, Chris Cooke missed a stumping opportunity off Bailey, and a run-out chance was also wasted. Bracey's knock saw him surpass 6,000 First-Class runs and set the tone for a total that looked unlikely the previous afternoon.

Glamorgan’s reply started cautiously after lunch, but early breakthroughs put them under pressure. Ajeet Singh Dale removed Zain Ul Hassan with a sharp spell of pace, and Archie Bailey continued his standout day by dismissing Asa Tribe and Kiran Carlson, reducing the hosts to 87 for 3.

Sam Northeast looked solid before a bizarre dismissal saw him bowled by Graeme van Buuren — a ball that spun past his outside edge and clipped leg stump bail from behind. At 121 for 4, Glamorgan were in trouble.

However, as the ball softened and the sun beat down, batting conditions eased, allowing Ingram and Kellaway to settle. The pair added an unbroken 107-run stand, using patience and composure to frustrate the visitors in the late afternoon. Both batters brought up their fifties, steering Glamorgan into a position of strength heading into day three.

With Glamorgan still trailing by 152 runs and six wickets in hand, the contest remains evenly balanced, promising an intriguing continuation to this storied rivalry.
