Thomas Rew’s Record-Breaking Century Powers England U19s to Thrilling One-Wicket Win Over India

A blistering century from Somerset wicketkeeper-batter Thomas Rew helped England Under-19s snatch a dramatic one-wicket victory over India in the second Youth ODI at Northampton, levelling the five-match series 1-1.

Rew smashed 131 off just 89 balls, reaching his century in only 73 deliveries — the fastest ever by an England U19 player, breaking Ben Foakes' 79-ball record set in 2012. His innings featured 16 fours and six sixes in a stunning display of power and finesse, as England chased down India’s 290 with three balls to spare.

England, who had elected to field first, were led by Surrey seamer Alex French’s 4 for 71, while Alex Green and Jack Home chipped in with three wickets apiece. Despite a disciplined bowling effort late in the innings, England’s seamers were inconsistent early on, conceding 26 runs in wides.

India’s innings was built on a strong start from 14-year-old sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi (45) and Vihaan Malhotra (49), who guided the visitors to 67 in the opening 10 overs. A 78-run partnership between Rahul Kumar and Kanishk Chouhan later pushed India to a competitive 290 in 49 overs before the tail collapsed under pressure from French.

In reply, England’s chase began shakily. They slipped to 47 for 3 inside 12 overs, with opener Ben Dawkins, Ben Mayes, and Isaac Mohammed all falling cheaply. But Rew, in partnership with Rocky Flintoff (39), steadied the innings with a vital 123-run stand across 21 overs.

Rew was in imperious form, dispatching bowlers all around the ground. He accelerated superbly after a cautious start, taking on spinners and seamers alike — including back-to-back sixes over midwicket off Mohammed Enaan and a 22-run over against RS Ambrish, who finished with 4 for 80.

Rew eventually fell with England still needing 61 off 10.2 overs, caught in the deep off Parth Patel. The game tightened further as wickets tumbled — Joe Moores, Ralphie Albert, and Home departed in quick succession — leaving England needing 12 runs off the final two overs with just one wicket in hand.

Seb Morgan, however, held his nerve. After striking a six off Guha in the penultimate over, he sealed the win with a boundary with three balls remaining, finishing unbeaten as England closed on 291 for 9.

With the series now tied at 1-1, both sides will head into the third ODI with momentum and high stakes, following a classic youth-level contest that had all the ingredients of a senior international thriller.
