Donald’s Record-Breaking Blitz Propels Derbyshire to Vitality Blast Victory Over Yorkshire

A blistering innings from Aneurin Donald powered Derbyshire Falcons to a stunning seven-wicket win over Yorkshire in their Vitality Blast North Group clash at Queen’s Park. Chasing a daunting target of 201, Donald’s breathtaking 85 off just 30 balls saw the Falcons cruise home with 16 balls to spare, significantly denting Yorkshire’s hopes of reaching the quarter-finals.

Donald reached his half-century in just 13 balls — equalling the record for the fastest fifty in Blast history — as he tore into the Yorkshire attack with remarkable aggression. His innings included seven sixes and eight boundaries, lighting up Chesterfield in a powerplay blitz that yielded 90 runs for Derbyshire.

The tone was set early, as Donald took 20 runs off Dom Bess in the opening over, followed by 25 off Matt Milnes’ second. Will O’Rourke was then dispatched for multiple sixes, with Donald reaching his fifty by the fourth over in a stunning display of power hitting.

Despite a slight slowdown in the middle overs, Donald resumed his assault with a scoop over fine leg for six, and then a sweeping maximum off Jafer Chohan brought up Derbyshire’s 100. His explosive opening stand of 115 with Australian Caleb Jewell (who fell for a well-made 28) laid the platform for the chase.

Donald’s innings finally ended when he pulled Chohan to deep midwicket, but by then the damage had been done. Wayne Madsen (38* off 28) and Ross Whiteley (25* off 17) steered Derbyshire home comfortably to secure their third win of the group stage.

Earlier, Yorkshire had posted what seemed a competitive total of 200 for 6, led by Jordan Thompson’s late fireworks — an unbeaten 37 off 11 balls that included four sixes. His blitz, including 24 runs off the final over bowled by Zak Chappell, boosted Yorkshire after their top-order had faltered.

Dawid Malan (36) and Jonny Bairstow (34) provided momentum during the middle overs, but key wickets at crucial times, including two from Mohammad Ghazanfar (2 for 21), halted their progress. James Wharton added 32, but Yorkshire lost regular wickets to finish just short of what was ultimately a chaseable target.

The defeat marks Yorkshire’s eighth consecutive T20 loss at Queen’s Park, and leaves their hopes of a knockout spot hanging by a thread.
