Glenn Maxwell continued his superb all-round form in MLC 2025 with another three-wicket haul, leading Washington Freedom to a dominant six-wicket win over MI New York in a rain-shortened clash at Lauderhill. The win sealed top spot on the points table for Freedom, who now face Texas Super Kings in Qualifier 1.
MI New York, already assured of a playoff berth but finishing fourth overall, fielded a rotated XI for their final league match. The decision backfired as their batting crumbled under consistent pressure from a sharp Freedom bowling attack.
Maxwell set the tone early, striking inside the powerplay alongside Jack Edwards as MINY limped to 33 for 2 after five overs. The slide continued with debutant Kunwarjeet Singh (33 off 30) offering the only real resistance. Once he fell on the first ball of the 11th over, MINY’s innings never recovered, ending on a modest 112 for 8 from 18 overs.
Maxwell finished with figures of 3 for 29 — his second consecutive three-wicket haul — and was again named Player of the Match. Glenn Phillips chipped in with a miserly spell, taking 2 for 3 to dismantle the lower order.
In reply, Washington Freedom made light work of the target. Despite early setbacks — Mitchell Owen and Rachin Ravindra falling cheaply — Andries Gous (46* off 34) and Mark Chapman (27 off 18) steered the innings with a composed third-wicket partnership.
Chapman departed in the 11th over, but Gous carried on, guiding Freedom to the finish line in the 15th over alongside Phillips.
Washington Freedom’s win was a statement of dominance heading into the playoffs. With just one loss in the league phase, they now take on Texas Super Kings in Qualifier 1, where a spot in the final is up for grabs. Meanwhile, MI New York, having finished with only three wins from ten matches, face a challenging Eliminator clash against San Francisco Unicorns.
