McCullum: England Must Support 'Hurting' Captain Stokes

Brendon McCullum, England's head coach, has expressed concern for captain Ben Stokes, stating that he is "hurting" following the team’s 2-1 series defeat in Pakistan. McCullum remains confident that Stokes, who recently returned from a torn hamstring, will bounce back when England faces New Zealand next month.

Stokes struggled throughout the series, failing to make a significant impact with only 53 runs in four innings and bowling 10 wicketless overs. He apologized to his teammates after losing his temper due to fielding errors in the second Test, which marked a tough return for him after an intense rehabilitation period.

"It was a significant injury, and he worked incredibly hard to come back," McCullum said. "As driven as he is, that effort can sometimes cloud decision-making. It’s natural, and as long as he learns from it, he'll be fine moving forward."

Despite the disappointment of the series—only the second loss since Stokes took over as captain—McCullum emphasized the importance of supporting Stokes. He noted the need for consistent messaging from the management to ensure the team remains focused on their goals.

"It's my job to support him and keep our messaging clear about how we want to play moving forward," McCullum added. "Stokes has been precise in his vision for the team, and it's crucial to stick with that, even during tough times."

With England losing six of their eight Tests in Asia this year, McCullum acknowledged that improvements are necessary, particularly in adapting to spin-friendly conditions. He reflected on missed opportunities in the subcontinent and emphasized the need for a clearer approach.

"We need to foster an environment that's confident and clear in its messaging," he said. "While there's a quick turnaround before the New Zealand series, we must learn from our experiences in Pakistan and strive to improve."

As England prepares for the upcoming series, McCullum is hopeful that the team can bounce back and build on the lessons learned from this challenging tour.
